- Scones with jam and butter
- If you love scones as much as we do, be sure to try one while in England. If you think America can make scones, then you’re in for a surprise! Unlike most American scones, British scones are a lot less sugary and are more enjoyable (personal opinion) with butter and real jam.
- Traditional fish and chips
- One word: YUM. Fast fish and chip places can be found in a lot of places around England, get ready to enjoy a hearty beer battered fish with large, potato style fries.
- Tea time sandwiches.
- Whether it’s a chicken salad or egg salad sandwich, these little sandwiches cut in half hit the spot in the mid-afternoon with a cup of tea.
- Enjoy a GOOD coffee ( not your run-of-the-mill Starbucks)
- We happen to survive on coffee, meaning we have had our fair share of it while traveling (although Anne may be a bit more obsessed). It is always an essential item while traveling on the cheap, early morning flights after sleeping in a crappy hostel bed with 8 other people in the room (been there, not recommended). So enjoy a quality brewed latte in a proper glass with a stirring spoon, and you’ll understand what we’re talking about once you have a coffee that’s significantly less sugary and creamy than the ones you may have had in America.
- Bacon Sandwich
- English bacon is NOT like American bacon. American bacon is straight fat and the idea of eating it alone on the sandwich may make you feel queasy. However, English bacon is a bit more like a small slice of spiral ham, with more actual meat and less fat, some people we know have compared it to Canadian bacon. So if you like ham sandwiches on a hard roll bun, then you’ll probably like an English bacon sandwich.
- Traditional cake with REAL cream
- There’s nothing like a really moist, freshly baked slice of chocolate cake with REAL, unpasteurized cream poured over it. If you’re able to bend your diet or cheat day food plans, treat yourself to any locally owned cafe and a slice of cake with a side of cream. I (Anne) had the pleasure of enjoying some chocolate cake with cream in a small town cafe while in Wales, and it was worth the thousands of calories I inhaled with each bite.
